More Seniors Looking for Love and Companionship Online

By: Jody Smith

Online dating used to be something nobody wanted to admit to doing. The feeling was that looking for someone online was proof of being someone who couldn't cut it with "real" people in their community, so belonging to an online dating site wasn't something people talked about much.

Eventually it became more acceptable for young people to look online, but the idea of a senior making connections through online dating was somehow still a shocking thought. Grown children worried that Mom or Dad would somehow be taken advantage of online.

But how things have changed since then.

According to Thirdage.com, the over-forty group is flourishing on online dating sites, especially for people whose social circle have become smaller as they've aged. Now the appeal of being able to meet people from such an enormous pool of prospects is more understandable. Being able to read a potential date's profile and exchange information makes it possible for a senior to narrow down the number of possible matches quickly and relatively painlessly.

If you've never done online dating before, here are a few suggestions that can help you find your way:

When you choose a picture for your profile, don't let vanity make the choice for you. Yes, you want your picture to cast you in your best light, but keep in mind that ultimately you're hoping to meet someone in person, and they're going to need to recognize you and not be disappointed upon first meeting. This means it is better to resist the temptation to post a photo that is you, but 10 years younger or 25 pounds lighter than you are now. The person who will be interested in the real you is going to be open to a picture of the real you.

Another thing to keep in mind is to not get distracted by the first good-looking person you see. Remember that you are also looking for the whole package. Pay attention to what they say about who they are, what is important to them, and decide whether or not they seem like someone who might be compatible with you.

You don't want to be a complete cynic, but you also should remember a few basic truths about human beings-- people will try to put their best foot forward, but they also may fudge the truth a bit to make themselves more appealing.

So be savvy. But if you keep wondering about what might happen with online dating, take a deep breath, keep these suggestions in mind, and go see what's out there.
