Seniors: What to Do on Summer Vacation

By: Jody Smith

Marketwatch.com has compiled some useful suggestions for seniors looking for a place to go on vacation, or for younger folks planning a trip for their parents and family.

Founder of Grandparents magazine Katrina Hayday Wester recommends Puerto Rico to seniors. Puerto Rico is an island touching the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Spanish is the primary language but English is used everywhere you go. You won't deal with foreign currency, exchange rates or complications due to immigration because Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States. Temperatures rarely stray from the mid-80s Fahrenheit.

Author of "Life Begins at 50" Leonard Hansen encourages seniors to head to Washington, D.C., especially if they are taking their grandchildren along. The area is rich with historical landmarks, sightseeing and tours. Touring the Capitol building and the FBI building are impressive and seeing Congress, the Senate, and the House of Representatives will make visiting Washington, D.C. something children will never forget.

Helena Koenig of Grandtravel suggests that traveling to Scotland and England would be a lovely adventure. While Grandtravel offers tours, you can also visit these places independently or with other tour groups. Some of the popular stops are the Scottish Highlands, where you might see a Highland Fling performed in kilts of tartan. Palaces, castles and cathedrals in Scotland and England are breathtaking pieces of history.

Elderhostel offers a package for Seattle and Puget Sound. Once again, you can go for a package like this or go on your own or with another group. The suggested area is an inviting one. You might take in the Klondike Gold Rush Museum and Pioneer Square. Eat seafood in Seattle. Observe its natural habitat at the Ballard Locks. Or see it in what surely seems like an unnatural situation, like Pike Place Market's flying fish.

If you're in good shape and ready for adventure, Wilderness Inquiry's Greg Lais recommends a journey along the Missouri River that encompasses the historical Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery from two centuries ago. Seeing the Rocky Mountains, following the Missouri River is a historical and personal odyssey never to be forgotten.

According to FTNnews.com, travel group YMT Vacations thinks Hawaii is a great place to vacation. Its popularity continues to increase year after year. The fact that Hawaii is part of the United States avoids complications that come with visiting foreign countries. And of course the weather, the scenery, the history and the food all combine to create a great holiday.

And lastly we hear from Ralph Warner who authored "Get a Life: You Don't Need a Million to Retire Well". He didn't point to any geographical location or recommend any particular activities, sightseeing or otherwise. He believes, you don't need a great place so much as you need a family. He 'd love to see us all gather our families for reunions or traveling together. Warner believes this is the best way to create treasured memories this summer.
