Traveling for the Young At Heart

By: Jody Smith

You've spent years being responsible and tending to your many obligations. Maybe you're wondering if you've come to the punch line of a bad joke. Now that you have the time maybe you're just too old to travel.

But traveling for seniors can be done with your needs in mind.

Trying to keep expenses down to fit a retirement budget? Home exchange clubs are one way to travel economically, for only a small yearly fee, rather than paying the costs of hotel rooms and the like.

Group tours and cruises can be a great mode of travel if you don't want to drive, and if you don't want to travel by yourself. And some tours offer seniors traveling alone trips that might be called single-friendly.

These types of cruises and tour groups have some special features for seniors on their own. The cost of accommodations may be cheaper if you are willing to take a roommate during the trip. If they can't match you with a roommate, you would still pay a reduced rate.

Or maybe you aren't interested in traveling with a tour group. Perhaps you might like to set up your own home base at a cottage or a hotel. You can take advantage of the amenities in the area you've chosen with day tours and taxi tours.

You can hire local tour guides. You can pour over information about the area in guidebooks or online. Travel agents can be very helpful and informative so don't hesitate to have a list of questions ready.

If you would rather be a bit less adventurous, target areas near people you know. You can spend time with them, and you can also use what they know about their community to decide what you'd like to see and do.

You can head for a resort area that has plenty going on without having to travel too far. Day trips can be stimulating, and just enjoying the facilities offered by the resort can fill a day with enjoyment.

All-inclusive resorts take the guesswork out of budgeting and doling out your holiday dollars throughout your stay. Most expenses are covered in the price, so you can enjoy your meals, day trips, use of facilities and lodging without needing to keep a running tab in your head.

Don't like having to interact with a tour guide? Check out phone apps that fill you in on the area. Want help with translation? Need to know about conversion rates for currency? Can't read the menu? There are apps for that too, and a whole lot more!

What if you're not a single, and you don't want to hang with family members or play roomies with a stranger? What if you would like a romantic adventure with your partner? That's what couples-only resorts are for.

Don't assume you're just too old and the time for this has passed you by. Remember, romance isn't just for the young, it's also for the young at heart.
